We have recently upgraded our X-ray equipment and gone digital, just like most people’s cameras. The advantages to patients are there is a reduced radiation dose, and the images are more consistent. The images can be magnified and manipulated to aid our diagnostic judgements. They should be routinely taken at intervals dependant on each individuals needs.
X rays are good at recording decay where adjacent teeth meet. Often these small lesions can be measured and monitored. With good oral hygiene such as flossing and fluoride rinses these lesions can be reversed and a permanent filling is not required. Unfortunately, if lesions are noted from the X ray on the biting surface of the tooth a conventional permanent filling will be required along with the necessary injection
